Audi RS5 (New Generation): The Ultimate All-Round Performance Machine?
Desclaimer:
For the longest time, if someone had asked me to pick one car that I could keep for a lifetime, my answer would have been simple—the Audi RS3. It struck the perfect balance between performance, practicality, and everyday usability.

But not anymore.

There’s a new contender that has completely changed my perspective—the new-generation Audi RS5. After taking a closer look at what it offers, it’s hard not to be impressed. This isn’t just an upgrade; it feels like a significant leap forward in terms of design, technology, and performance.

Let’s dive in.

---

A More Aggressive, Wider Design.

The first thing you notice about the new RS5 is its stance. It’s visibly wider than before, giving it a much more planted and aggressive look. Compared to the standard A5, the RS5’s grille extends further down, making the front fascia look sharper and more like a proper sports car.

The headlamp and DRL design remain familiar, staying true to Audi’s clean and sharp design language. However, it’s the overall proportions that make the biggest difference here.

To accommodate wider tires, the car itself has been broadened. It rides on standard 20-inch wheels, which not only enhance its visual appeal but also contribute to better grip and handling.
At the rear, the design is unmistakably Audi, yet noticeably more muscular. The large dual exhausts—one on each side—add to its sporty character, both visually and acoustically.

Carbon fiber elements are generously used across the car, including:

Mirror caps

Front lower skirts

Rear spoiler

Rear bumper

These touches not only reduce weight but also elevate the car’s premium sporty appeal.

A Subtle Shift in Lineup Strategy:

An interesting change worth noting is Audi’s evolving naming strategy. What was previously known as the A4 is now effectively the A5. This shift also impacts performance models—meaning what we once knew as the RS4 will now likely be positioned as the RS5 in markets like India.

Plug-In Hybrid Power: Performance Meets Efficiency

Under the hood, the RS5 continues with its 2.9-liter V6 turbo-petrol engine, producing 450 BHP—just like before. However, the big change lies in the addition of a plug-in hybrid system.

With the help of an electric motor and a battery pack, the total power output now jumps to approximately 639 BHP.

This added electrification brings multiple benefits:

Instant torque delivery

Reduced turbo lag

Improved efficiency

In fact, the RS5 can travel up to 80 km purely on electric power, making it surprisingly practical for daily urban use.

---

Advanced Rear-Wheel Technology for Sharper Handling

One of the most exciting aspects of the new RS5 is its rear-wheel technology.

In addition to sending power to the rear axle, Audi has equipped the car with two individual electric motors—one for each rear wheel. This allows precise torque distribution during cornering.

For example, when taking a turn, the outer wheel can receive more power, improving grip and stability. This results in sharper handling and better cornering dynamics.

While a similar concept exists in the Audi RS3, the RS5 takes it further by integrating electric assistance, making the system more responsive and effective.

Performance Figures That Impress:

Despite the added weight from the hybrid system, performance remains exceptional.

0–100 km/h: 3.6 seconds

Improved braking distance compared to the previous generation

The added power and refined dynamics ensure that the RS5 remains a true performance machine.

Interior: A Blend of Sportiness and Technology:

Step inside, and the RS5 greets you with a cabin that feels both sporty and futuristic.

Triple-Screen Setup

The car features three screens, offering a highly digital experience. While the third screen feels slightly separate in design, the overall system is feature-rich and functional.

Driver-Focused Cockpit

The steering wheel is wrapped in Alcantara leather, with a flat top and bottom, enhancing its sporty feel. The controls are tactile—offering a proper press rather than just touch input, which is a welcome improvement.

Customization & Tech

The digital instrument cluster is fully customizable, allowing drivers to tailor the display according to their preferences.

Additional highlights include:

Built-in dashcam

App store with entertainment features

Headphone connectivity for passengers

Bang & Olufsen sound system

There’s also a driver monitoring system that detects fatigue or lack of attention, adding a layer of safety.

---

Comfort and Practicality

The RS5 isn’t just about performance—it’s also built for everyday usability.

Front Seats

Sporty bucket seats

Electric adjustment

Heating and ventilation

Extendable thigh support

Lumbar support

Rear Seats

The rear offers decent space with good knee room and headroom. However, the large center tunnel makes it more comfortable for two passengers rather than three.

Additional rear features include:

AC vents

Two Type-C charging ports

Three-zone climate control

The boot space is also practical enough for daily use, and the electric tailgate adds convenience.

---

Expected Pricing and Competition

Considering that the RS5 is a plug-in hybrid and likely to be imported as a completely built unit (CBU), pricing will play a crucial role.

Expected price (India): ₹1.2 – ₹1.3 crore (ex-showroom)

At this price point, it directly challenges cars like the BMW M4, which typically costs upwards of ₹1.4 crore.

With its hybrid tech, higher power output, and advanced handling systems, the RS5 could have a clear edge.

Final Verdict: A True All-Rounder:

What makes the new Audi RS5 truly special is its versatility.

Comfortable enough for daily driving

Efficient enough for city use (thanks to electric mode)

Powerful enough for thrilling performance

Capable enough for occasional track days

It’s rare to find a car that does everything so well—and looks this good while doing it.

If I had to choose one car today to keep for a lifetime, the answer is no longer the RS3.

It’s the RS5.
