Maruti Suzuki Jimny: Your Ultimate Guide to India's Off-Road Marvel
Hey Off-Road Enthusiasts! Welcome to Dream Machine!
Many of you have been eagerly awaiting a comprehensive review of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny, and the wait is finally over! Today, on Motoroctane, we're diving deep into the Jimny to help you decide if this rugged SUV should be your next adventure companion. Plus, I've got some special news and a valuable tip to help you earn from your existing car. So, let's hit the road!
The Jimny's Design••

A Nod to the Iconic Gypsy?
The moment you lay eyes on the Jimny, it's hard not to be reminded of the legendary Gypsy. This overall styling feels like a natural evolution of the Gypsy family. Do you feel the Gypsy vibe? Let us know in the comments!
The Jimny sports classic circular headlamps, complete with a practical washer – a godsend for clearing mud and slush after an off-road escapade. While the global version features a blacked-out grille, the Indian Jimny gets a touch of chrome, adding a local flavor. Both Zeta and Alpha variants feature blacked-out bumpers, a smart design choice that minimizes maintenance costs from off-road scrapes and enhances its rugged appeal.
Side Profile & Off-Road Prowess
Moving to the side, you'll notice the cleverly designed bumper that doesn't extend all the way to the wheel, preventing scrapes on steep inclines. The 15-inch tyres are chosen for optimal ride quality and off-road priority, though 16-inch aftermarket options are available (be mindful of potential off-road impact and tyre cuts with low-profile options).
The Jimny isn't overtly tall, making ingress and egress surprisingly easy – no climbing required! Its side profile even draws comparisons to the iconic G-Wagon. What do you think?
Key dimensions and features:
°°Ground Clearance: A robust 210 mm
°°Weight: Around 1200 kg (depending on variant and gearbox)
°°Door Design: Front doors are longer than the rear, allowing for a wider opening, making it easier to get in and out.
Rear Styling & Practicality••

The Jimny breaks away from typical Maruti tail lamp placements (connected or vertical) by positioning them on the bumpers. While Maruti claims this is to maximize boot opening, it does raise concerns about potential damage during off-roading. However, it's the only Maruti car to feature a spare wheel mounted on the side-opening tailgate.
The boot space is a modest 219 liters. "219 only baby!" While it can be a disadvantage for four passengers on long trips, the 50:50 split-folding rear seats offer flexibility to expand cargo capacity when needed.
Minor Gripes & a Smart Way to Earn!
One notable design choice that feels a bit dated is the use of old-fashioned grab-style door handles, reminiscent of the Maruti 800. Also, the passive entry button's somewhat awkward placement feels like an afterthought.

Jimny's Interiors: Functionality Over Flash
The Jimny isn't about luxurious, tech-laden interiors. Its purpose is clear: to conquer any terrain while keeping you comfortable. The cabin is predominantly hard plastics, even on the door pads, prioritizing durability for its go-anywhere nature. The fit, finish, and material quality are decent, reflecting its rugged intent.
The steering wheel, familiar from other Maruti cars, features audio controls on the left and cruise control on the right. The instrument cluster clearly draws inspiration from the Gypsy, offering a classic yet informative display for mileage, range, and other driver information.
The top-end Alpha variant boasts a 9-inch touchscreen with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a reverse parking camera.
The seats are wide and comfortable, ideal for long journeys. However, practicality is somewhat compromised. There's no space for bottles on the door pads, only two small bottle holders in the center, and limited storage in the center console or near the handbrake. While there's a space above the glove box for your phone, the glove box itself isn't huge.
The seating position is excellent, offering a commanding view, but it lacks seat height adjustment. For a 6-foot tall individual, rear knee room is limited, with knees almost touching the front seats. The rear can comfortably accommodate two passengers, with three being a tight squeeze. While the seat recline is decent, there's no rear center armrest or AC vents. The rear windows are also smaller than the front, though all glass is UV cut. Storage at the rear is limited to pockets behind the front seats.
The Jimny is powered by a 1.5-liter petrol engine, paired with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. This is the older engine, not Maruti's new dual-jet, reportedly used for global compatibility.
On-Road Performance:
The Jimny offers surprisingly good pickup and a smooth overall drive. Body roll is well-controlled, and the torque delivery is commendable. The car is easy to drive, with clear bonnet edges aiding maneuverability, even for those accustomed to smaller cars. Frequent gear shifts aren't necessary, making it comfortable for city and winding road driving.
The ride quality is fantastic, soaking up bad roads with ease. Unlike the stiff Gypsy, the Jimny glides over imperfections, making long drives comfortable without jarring movements. Gear shifts are smooth, though throws are a bit long. Minor vibrations can be felt on the gear lever and clutch at higher speeds, which is unusual for a Maruti. Engine noise is noticeable when revved, but road noise and cabin insulation are excellent. The light steering further enhances ease of driving.
While impressed with its on-road characteristics, high-speed performance might feel a bit dull, and overtakes above 100 kmph could be challenging.
Mileage••
°° Manual: 11-12 kmpl (city), 15-16 kmpl (highway)
°° Automatic: 10-11 kmpl (city), 13-14 kmpl (highway)
Given its 4WD capability, these figures are understandable.
Off-Road Prowess••
This is where the Jimny truly shines! Driving in 4 Low, the car effortlessly navigates challenging terrains with minimal accelerator input. The low-end torque is outstanding, making it incredibly easy to drive through natural, unbuilt off-road patches. Whether climbing inclines or descending tricky slopes, the Jimny maintains grip and confidence. Its articulation is impressive, handling side inclines without a hint of nervousness. Even on slippery, rocky patches, the Jimny performs admirably. It's clear that Maruti has done an exceptional job in tuning the Jimny for serious off-road adventures.
Should You Buy the Maruti Jimny?
The Jimny isn't a direct competitor to popular SUVs like the Brezza, Venue, or Nexon. It's built for a different purpose, and you're paying for its hardcore off-road capabilities. While not feature-loaded, its true value lies in its unseen underpinnings and ability to conquer terrains where other cars falter.
Pricing is key: If priced around ₹13-15 lakh (on-road), it would be an excellent buy. Above ₹16-17 lakh, it might feel expensive. The real investment is in its off-road engineering.
If you're looking for a unique, head-turning product that offers decent practicality and exceptional off-road prowess, especially for mountain trails and adventurous escapades, the Jimny is an outstanding choice.
