Stepping inside the Golf GTI is an experience in itself. The iconic tartan/plaid pattern on the single-piece backrest of the sport seats immediately evokes GTI heritage. Feature-wise, the CBU import comes generously equipped with Matrix LED headlamps, Level 2 ADAS, and even a sunroof (optional in Europe). However, some European options like the Harman Kardon audio system, power-adjustable and ventilated leather seats, and crucially, adaptive dampers (DCC) are not offered in India.
Driving the GTI: The True Test:
Our time at Natrax provided the perfect playground to unleash the GTI. On the high-speed oval, the car's unwavering stability and Germanic solidity instilled immense confidence. The 2.0-liter TSI engine, pushing 265 horsepower and 370 Nm of torque to the front wheels via a 7-speed DSG and a limited-slip differential, delivers strong, smooth, and unflinching power. Reaching speeds of 267 km/h was an absolute cinch, with the car remaining remarkably composed.
While the acceleration is potent, it’s undeniably clinical, a characteristic often associated with German engineering. The ADAS system proved effective on the track, offering early lane departure warnings and maintaining safe distances in convoy.
The true magic of the Golf GTI, however, unfolds on the handling circuit. Despite its size, the car feels light on its feet and remarkably agile. The front-wheel-drive setup, coupled with the clever limited-slip differential, effectively mitigates torque steer and understeer, allowing the car to pull into corners with impressive composure. The steering, light in comfort mode, weights up beautifully in sport mode, providing reassuring feedback.
The DSG gearbox shines in the #GTI, delivering seamless power with no interruptions or hiccups, ensuring all power is put to the ground. The exhaust note, with its pleasing pops, bangs, and rumble, adds to the engaging experience without being overbearing. Strong all-around disc brakes provide ample stopping power.
